In an age of ever-changing restrictions, varying from state to state, navigating an online gun store can seem tricky. But with the correct information and licensing, it is possible to legally obtain the firearm you have your eye on. Our team at Mel’s Outdoors breaks down your questions to help you navigate this online buying process with ease.
Can I Buy a Gun Online?
Yes, but you’ll need the proper paperwork and a connection to a licensed FFL dealer. It’s not hard to get everything assembled correctly, but you want to be incredibly thorough. Missteps, even minor ones, can result in longer shipping times or interruptions.
When it comes to Mel’s Outdoors and other online gun stores, the best thing you can do is read through and familiarize yourself with standard FFL requirements because you’ll need to submit accurate and up-to-date information before your purchase is rendered complete.
Once your product arrives, set up a pick-up time to get your purchase from your FFL dealer. When picking up your new firearm from your FFL dealer, you must bring an up-to-date license with your current address, and depending on the type of firearm being purchased, you may be required to provide your Permit to Purchase. In addition, at this time, you’ll need to pass a federally-mandated background check administered by the dealer.
Often people ask us if they need a conceal and carry license to buy a gun online, and the answer is IT DEPENDS. Because there are many variables in firearm regulations, we recommend reaching out to your local FFL prior to purchase to familiarize yourself with the regulations that apply to you.
As an online gun store, our store policies include a quick reference guide available. See “SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS” to find more information about your state.
Keep in mind these regulations are subject to change without notice, and this is purely a reference guide. Regulations often differ by City/County/State, and we strictly adhere to all regulations. Exceptions will not be made.
What is an FFL Dealer?
FFL stands for Federal Firearms License. An FFL dealer has this license and can legally sell firearms and accessories. So before you purchase a gun online at Mel’s Outdoors, you’ll need to connect with a local FFL dealer.
What is Form 4473?
Form 4473, also known as the Firearms Transaction Record, is an ATF form and a requirement when buying from an FFL dealer.
This form will ask:
- Your identity
- Questions ensuring you’re not a prohibited person
Note: You cannot legally buy a gun online if you’re a prohibited person. Here’s a thorough list of disqualifications as described by the ATF.
